Audemars Piguet’s iconic Royal Oak, released in 1972, was designed entirely by legendary watch designer Gérald Genta. Its octagonal bezel, integrated bracelet, and tapisserie-patterned dial, featuring overlapping square and circular guilloché patterns, combined with a stainless steel case—a rare find in luxury sports lines—offered a truly innovative look at the time. When it was first released, it was met with mixed reactions within the industry as a “heretical” model that deviated from watch design codes. The name comes from a fast battleship of the Royal Navy launched in 1914. Gérald Genta’s design was inspired by the windshields of professional divers’ helmets. Audemars Piguet’s patented mechanism, which secures the bezel to the caseback with eight screws, is also highly regarded.

Nearly half a century after its birth, the watch has risen from a “misfit” to a brand icon, with a diverse lineup including chronographs, perpetual calendars, and ultra-thin models. Gérald Genta’s challenge, once mocked as reckless, bore fruit as the origin of the “luxury sports watch,” and it continues to evolve today.
